Another goal he achieved by moving south was to use his new Gulf Coast neighborhood as the springboard for what he hoped would be a successful new career in residential real estate. Doug made good on that promise in short order by becoming a top producer at Michael Saunders & Company. He is a perennial top producer achieving $15.5 million in sales volume in 2018 and $22.3 million in 2017. Doug is considered an authority on boating and waterfront properties throughout Sarasota and her offshore islands.
Not exactly an overnight phenomenon, Doug's success at listing and selling properties - both on and off the Key - has been developed by a lifetime of customer service experience. Growing up in Port Austin, MI - where his family owned and operated a Lake Huron resort -Doug's parents ingrained in him at an early age in the finer points of creating exceptional customer experiences. He and his three siblings - Dave, Barb and Julie - spent summers doing just that, creating wonderful experiences for every customer and guest.
Prior to making his move to Florida, Doug also gained significant sales and marketing experience during a career with DTE Energy, a utility company that serves millions of customers throughout Michigan. He joined the energy giant after graduating with a degree in engineering from Michigan State University, where he also gained a significant understanding of new construction; and earned a residential builder's license from the State of Michigan.
On days off, you are likely to see Doug cycling the key or playing a round of golf at the Longboat Key Club, where he is a member. He readily admits that the biggest bonus to living on St. Armands is that many of his most lasting friendships and business relationships have been formed there. While Doug has absolutely no regrets about leaving the frosty Michigan winters behind, vacations often find him skiing in the Colorado Rockies.
